What does happiness mean to you?

Hey guys welcome back to Satisfying as F***! In last post we promised you to talk about happiness.  We decided to talk about it as a goodbye post. It's very sad but Satisfying as F*** has come to an end. 😢

How do you define happiness? Everyone has a different meaning for it, everyone has a
different way of achieving it. Aristotle said happiness was a virtue but was he right? Or is happiness involved with ethics? Today I’m going to answer all of these questions.

Happiness is used in the context of mental or emotional states, including positive or pleasant emotions. It is also used in the context of life satisfaction or eudaimonia like Plato referred.

Happiness is something hard to describe with a word but easy to feel, and each of us has a different way to reach happiness. Aristotle stated that “happiness is the only thing that humans desire for their own sake, unlike riches, honor, health or friendship”. He observed that men sought riches, or honor or health not only for their own sake but also to be happy. For Aristotle, the term eudaimonia is an activity rather than an emotion or a state. According to Aristotle, the life of excellent rational activity is a happy life. I agree with Aristotle because happiness is a virtue which is why you should work on it.

Everyone desires to be happy, which is why you must be surrounded by people who make you feel that way. Every day you must ask yourself what truly makes you happy and if you’re in the correct path of achieving it. My family always makes me smile each day, my friends always make me laugh. I love to play basketball, football and crossfit, and when you make things you love you tend to be happy most of the time. But it is also good to be happy by yourself because you're not always going to be accompanied; enjoy some quality time by yourself.

It’s always good to be nice at other people because you don’t know if they are having a bad day, and by complimenting them you could make them happy. After all, it is not quite good to have cranky people in our world, although we must respect everyone's personalities because we don’t know what the have been through.

Now ethically speaking, to answer the question is happiness involved with ethics? Let’s remember the meaning of ethics, “moral principles that govern a person's behavior or the conducting of an activity”. Yeah, it is totally involved with ethics, because there are some acts that you do to be happy, some of us buy cars, others buy houses or travel. Many people decide what they want to do with happiness governing their mind, so if I want to make  my 3 years old sibling and I know that he’s been really wanting this toy because it is going to make it happy, would I stole the toy from the store? Probably but that is for the other person to decide. My point is that everyone has a different way of acting and some of us cloud our judgment with happiness. They say that “true love is when someone else’s happiness is your own”.

If you live a virtuous life you will be automatically happy? Not always, it absolutely depends on you, I remember my grandma always telling that there are people with a lot of money that are not happy, but I can’t be sure about it because I don’t have millions of dollars. But I think that you can be happy with and without a virtuous life because you decide if you want to be happy with the things you have.

In conclusion, greek philosophers also used to wonder what was happiness, and through the years many people also, of course everybody has a different way of achieving it and that is why we shouldn’t judge them. Aristotle referred to it as a virtue, and many people might agree or disagree with him. Happiness is involved with ethics and a virtuous life doesn’t mean that you are going to be automatically happy.

“Happiness depends on you!”
